Paint Booth Filters

A paint booth asks three different things of its filters. Intake air has to be clean before it reaches the booth; the ceiling filter has to spread that air evenly and hold overspray; and the exhaust stage has to trap what is left before it leaves the stack. Whalesens supplies all three: intake panel filters, ceiling filter media in rolls, and DPA pocket filters for the exhaust plenum.

Ceiling media is graded F5 / M5 with a polyester gradient density, and the pocket filters are G3 and G4 with an anti-adhesive surface treatment so overspray does not bridge the pockets. Tell us the booth type, the paint system and the airflow, and we will match the stages.

Intake, ceiling and exhaust

The intake filter protects the booth from outside dust and is a coarse to medium panel or bag. The ceiling filter is judged on diffusion — it has to spread air evenly and hold paint mist without sagging. The exhaust filter carries the heaviest load and is selected on paint-holding capacity, not on filtration grade.

Ceiling media vs pleated panel

Roll media is laid over the ceiling grid and replaced by the sheet, which suits a large flat area and a frequent change interval. A pleated panel is a framed filter used in the intake plenum or on smaller booths where a holding frame already exists.

Dry booth vs wet booth

A dry booth relies on filter media for the overspray and generates a solid waste stream, which is cheaper to dispose of than water treatment. A wet booth uses a water curtain for most of the paint and filters only the residue, so the filter load is much lighter.

FAQ

What is a paint booth filter?
A paint booth filter is a coarse to medium efficiency media filter used to keep dust out of the booth and to capture overspray before it reaches the extraction system. It is judged on paint-holding capacity and on holding its shape under a heavy load, rather than on fine particle efficiency.
How often should paint booth filters be changed?
Change on load, not on a calendar. The signal is a rise in the pressure drop across the stage, or visible sagging and paint bridging on the ceiling media. A booth that is used daily will typically change ceiling media far more often than the intake filters.
Why does the pocket filter have an anti-adhesive treatment?
Paint sticks to the pocket walls and closes the opening if the media is untreated. The anti-adhesive surface keeps the paint on the surface of the fibre rather than bridging between pockets, so the filter keeps its airflow until it is genuinely full.
How do I size the ceiling filter media?
The media is cut to the ceiling grid and laid over it, so the size follows the booth rather than a standard list. Send the grid dimensions and the number of sheets per change, and we will quote the roll or the cut sheets.
What temperature can the filters take?
The ceiling media and the DPA pocket filters are rated for standard booth operating temperatures, and the framed intake filters carry a higher continuous rating. If your process runs a curing or baking cycle through the booth, tell us the peak temperature, because it decides the media and the frame.
Are the filters flame retardant?
The media is available with F1 and B1 flame retardant treatment, which is the normal requirement for a booth installation. Confirm the clause in your fire specification and we will supply the corresponding grade.
Do I need a HEPA stage after the paint filters?
Only where the exhausted air is returned to the building or where the process demands it. A standard booth exhausts to atmosphere after the paint arrestor and pocket stage; air recirculation or a clean process area is what justifies a final HEPA filter.
Can the filters be supplied with activated carbon?
Yes, as an option on the intake panel filter, where odour from the paint system is noticeable outside the booth. The carbon load is light by design — a booth with a real solvent problem needs a dedicated carbon stage rather than a carbon-loaded intake panel.
