From Field Engineers: Avoid These Common Semiconductor Cleanroom Filter Selection Pitfalls

In the semiconductor industry, selecting the right cleanroom filters is crucial to maintain efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product yield. This article shares practical experiences and insights from the field to help engineers and procurement managers avoid common pitfalls in filter selection.

Introduction: The HEPA Misconception

When it comes to air filters in semiconductor facilities, the first word that comes to mind is often "HEPA." While HEPA filters are essential, relying solely on them can lead to high energy costs and frequent filter replacements. Missteps in filter selection can cause unexplained yield fluctuations, as seen in many cases where the wrong filters were installed.

Learnings from the Field

As a field engineer at Whalesens, I've encountered numerous semiconductor cleanroom setups. Here are the key lessons learned from various projects:

1. ISO Levels Are Built, Not Just Specified

A common mistake is assuming that a few H13 or H14 filters suffice for an ISO 5 cleanroom. In reality, cleanroom efficiency relies on a combination of pre-filters, medium filters, and HEPA filters. Skimping on the initial filters will inevitably require costly compensation later.

Cleanroom Level Recommended Filters Common Mistakes
ISO 8 H11/H12 or HEPA + F9 Using only F7, leading to rapid clogging.
ISO 7 H13 (MPPS ≥ 99.95%) Reducing pre-filter from G4 to F5, cutting filter life by half.
ISO 6 H13/H14 Inadequate air changes causing particle count issues.
ISO 5 H14 or ULPA Using H13, failing to meet efficiency standards.

2. Efficiency vs. Pressure Drop

Clients often demand "H13 efficiency" without considering pressure drop. This oversight results in fans operating under high load, significantly increasing energy costs. For example, a 60,000 CFM AHU with an additional 50Pa pressure drop could raise fan power by 3-5 kW, adding thousands to annual energy bills.

3. Installation and Leak Testing

Proper installation is critical. Even the best HEPA filters are ineffective if not sealed correctly. Common issues include aging gaskets, cracked gel seals, and damage during installation. Always use imported gel for sealing and ensure thorough leak testing, including both frame and filter surface scanning.

4. Invisible Threats: Chemical Filtration

Particulate filters alone aren't enough. Chemical filters are essential in environments with corrosive gases. For instance, factories near chemical plants or highways may face issues like copper corrosion due to SO₂, H₂S, and NOx gases. Incorporating activated carbon filters can mitigate these risks.

5. Practical Suggestions

New Builds: Include lifecycle costs in tender documents, not just initial purchase prices.
Retrofits: Measure current system pressure drop and terminal particle count to identify potential improvements.
Any Project: Ensure pressure gauges are installed to monitor filter life effectively.
