View Related Products →HVAC filtration is built as a ladder: a coarse stage takes the bulk of the dust, a medium stage protects the final filter, and the final stage decides the air quality in the occupied space. Whalesens supplies the media that the first two rungs are made from — synthetic HVAC filter media in G2, G3 and G4, in 10, 15 and 20 mm thicknesses — and the finished filters for all three stages.
The media is chosen by the dust load and by the pressure drop budget of the air handling unit, not by the filter grade alone. If you need a finished panel, pleated or bag filter for the same system, the Panel & Pleated Filters and Dust Collection Filters ranges cover those stages.

G2 stops lint and insects and is used where the air is visibly dirty; G3 is the general first stage in a commercial air handling unit; G4 is the usual choice directly ahead of a medium or fine filter, because it takes enough of the dust load to materially extend the life of the stage behind it.
Media in rolls or slices is cut and fitted on site, which suits a large flat area, a non-standard frame or a filter maker buying material. A finished panel filter arrives framed, gasketed and with a declared grade, which is what most HVAC contractors specify.
A pre-filter is not there to clean the air — it is there to keep the main filter alive. Doubling the dust load on the coarse stage is usually cheaper than replacing the medium stage twice as often, which is the whole argument for a staged system.
