HVAC Filters

HVAC filtration is built as a ladder: a coarse stage takes the bulk of the dust, a medium stage protects the final filter, and the final stage decides the air quality in the occupied space. Whalesens supplies the media that the first two rungs are made from — synthetic HVAC filter media in G2, G3 and G4, in 10, 15 and 20 mm thicknesses — and the finished filters for all three stages.

The media is chosen by the dust load and by the pressure drop budget of the air handling unit, not by the filter grade alone. If you need a finished panel, pleated or bag filter for the same system, the Panel & Pleated Filters and Dust Collection Filters ranges cover those stages.

How it compares

G2, G3 and G4 pre-filtration

G2 stops lint and insects and is used where the air is visibly dirty; G3 is the general first stage in a commercial air handling unit; G4 is the usual choice directly ahead of a medium or fine filter, because it takes enough of the dust load to materially extend the life of the stage behind it.

Media vs a finished panel filter

Media in rolls or slices is cut and fitted on site, which suits a large flat area, a non-standard frame or a filter maker buying material. A finished panel filter arrives framed, gasketed and with a declared grade, which is what most HVAC contractors specify.

Pre-filter vs main filter

A pre-filter is not there to clean the air — it is there to keep the main filter alive. Doubling the dust load on the coarse stage is usually cheaper than replacing the medium stage twice as often, which is the whole argument for a staged system.

FAQ

Which filter grade does an HVAC system need?
It follows the outdoor air quality and the use of the space: a coarse stage in front of everything, a medium stage for general occupied space, and a fine or HEPA stage only where the room classification demands it. Under ISO 16890 the selection is made on the particle size class, which is why the older EN 779 grade is a starting point rather than the whole answer.
What thickness of media should I use?
Whatever fits the holding frame with the media supported across its face. Thicker media holds more dust before it loads, at the cost of more depth and slightly higher resistance; 10, 15 and 20 mm cover most air handling units.
Why use a pre-filter if the main filter does the real work?
Because the main filter is the expensive one. A pre-filter takes most of the dust load at a low pressure drop, which extends the change interval of the medium or fine stage behind it and keeps the coil cleaner.
What pressure drop should I expect?
The HVAC media range runs at 20 to 25 Pa initial resistance and reaches 200 to 250 Pa final, depending on grade and thickness. Set the change point from the fan headroom and note it at commissioning.
How often should HVAC filters be changed?
On pressure drop, with a calendar check as a backstop. A filter that reaches its final resistance early is telling you either that the pre-filter is missing or that the outdoor air is dirtier than the design assumed.
ISO 16890 or EN 779?
ISO 16890 is the current international standard and reports efficiency by particle size class rather than as a single grade. EN 779 grades are still widely quoted in specifications, so most Whalesens products carry both where the data exists.
Can I fit the media into an existing frame?
Yes, that is the normal use for media in rolls and slices. Give us the frame opening and the depth, and we will supply the media cut to size so it can be refitted on site.
What formats is the media supplied in?
Rolls for large areas, pre-cut slices for a fixed frame size, and framed pads where you want the pad to arrive ready to fit. All three are cut to your dimensions rather than to a stock list.
