Whalesens supplies HEPA and ULPA filters from H13 through U17 for cleanrooms, pharmaceutical production, spray booths, data centers and commercial HVAC. The range covers deep-pleated, mini-pleated, V-bank, high-temperature panel and liquid-tank gel-seal constructions, in aluminium, stainless steel or hot-melt sealed frames.

How it compares

HEPA vs activated carbon

A HEPA stage removes particles; an activated carbon stage removes gases, vapours and odours. They are complementary rather than alternatives, which is why chemical laboratories, coating lines and cleanrooms usually run a carbon panel or a carbon bag filter ahead of, or behind, the HEPA terminal filter. If your problem is smell or solvent, HEPA alone will not fix it; if your problem is particles, carbon alone will not either.

HEPA vs ULPA

ULPA sits above HEPA: the same construction, a tighter media grade and a higher efficiency at the most penetrating particle size. The trade-off is resistance and airflow — a ULPA grade costs more pressure drop for the same face area, so fan energy goes up. Choose ULPA only where the classification or the process demands it; our H13 to U17 grades are built in the same frames, so the decision can be deferred to the size table.

MERV vs HEPA

MERV is an ASHRAE 52.2 rating; HEPA is an EN 1822 / ISO 29463 classification. They are measured on different test dusts and different particle sizes, so a MERV number cannot be converted into an H-grade. As a rule of thumb MERV 13-16 covers fine filtration in general HVAC, while H13 and above is terminal filtration for cleanrooms, and the two are used in series rather than chosen against each other.

What is a HEPA filter?
HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. A HEPA filter is rated at the most penetrating particle size, around 0.3 µm, where it has to remove at least 99.97% of the particles to meet the US HEPA definition, or H13 and above in the EN 1822 classification. Whalesens builds them from H13 through U17, in deep-pleated, mini-pleated, V-bank, high-temperature panel and liquid-tank gel-seal constructions.
What does a HEPA filter do?
It captures fine airborne particles — dust, smoke, pollen, mould spores and bacteria — by interception, impaction and diffusion as the air passes through a glass-fibre pleat pack. Our HEPA grades are declared for particles ≥0.5 µm, ≥0.3 µm and, from the U-grades up, ≥0.1 µm. It does not remove gases, vapours or odours: that needs an activated carbon stage in series.
How to clean a HEPA filter?
Industrially, you do not clean it — you look after it until it is spent. Vacuum the upstream face at low pressure or blow clean, dry air from the clean side to remove loose dust, and replace the filter when the resistance reaches the final value declared for its grade. Wet cleaning is not a service method: the glass-fibre media loses efficiency once it is wetted and the seal between pleat pack and frame is where leaks start. Where the process allows, fit a washable pre-filter upstream and clean that instead.
Can you wash a HEPA filter?
No. Our HEPA filters are sealed cartridges — the pleat pack is bonded into the frame with PU two-component adhesive or a liquid gel seal, and both the media and the seal are damaged by washing. Washing a HEPA filter is the usual cause of a filter that still looks clean but no longer holds its grade, which is why HEPA cartridges are replaced rather than reconditioned.
What is a true HEPA filter?
"True HEPA" is a consumer-market phrase, not a classification: it means the filter meets the HEPA definition of 99.97% at 0.3 µm, as opposed to "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-like" media that is only tested to a lower standard. Our industrial range is specified by grade — H10 to H14 and U15 to U17 — because a declared grade with a tested efficiency is what a cleanroom or a GMP audit can actually accept.
How often to change a HEPA filter?
Change on pressure drop, not on a calendar. A HEPA filter is spent when its resistance reaches the final value declared for the grade — typically two to three times the clean initial resistance — or when the airflow the installation needs can no longer be held. In cleanrooms and GMP areas the change interval is also driven by the documented leak test and by the room classification: a filter that passes its grade but fails an integrity scan is replaced regardless of resistance.
What is HEPA filter full form?
HEPA is the abbreviation of High-Efficiency Particulate Air; you will also see it written as High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestance or High-Efficiency Particulate Absorbing. All three describe the same filter class: a pleated media filter rated at the most penetrating particle size of about 0.3 µm.

HEPA efficiency is defined at the most penetrating particle size, around 0.3 µm — the size at which a filter of this type is weakest, so passing at 0.3 µm means passing at both larger and smaller particles. Our product data declares removal for ≥0.5 µm and ≥0.3 µm particles across the H-grades, and for ≥0.1 µm on the U-grades; the grade letters, not a single micron figure, are what the standards are written against.
