Filter Foam

Whalesens supplies reticulated polyurethane foam for filtration and protective duty: the WS-PRF polyether grade in 10 to 60 PPI, and an activated carbon loaded polyester foam for odour and gas removal. The foam is supplied as sheets and cut parts, in the density and pore size the application needs.

The polyether grade is the one to choose where the foam will see warm, humid air or repeated washing — it resists hydrolysis far better than a polyester foam, which is why it is used on EV charging vents, marine engine rooms and motor inlets rather than only indoors.

Selection table

Model Base material Pore size Density Temperature Fire rating
Polyether Mesh Filtration Flame Retardant Foam (Whalesens WS-PRF) Polyether polyurethane 10 – 60 PPI (accuracy ±5 PPI) 1.4 lb/ft³ (22.4 kg/m³), ±10% -45 °F to 225 °F (-43 °C to 107 °C) UL 94 recognised

How it compares

Polyether vs polyester foam

Polyether foam keeps its structure in warm, humid and wet service; polyester foam is cheaper but hydrolyses, which shows up as a foam that turns sticky and collapses after a season outdoors. For anything that will see weathering or washing, the polyether grade is the right starting point.

Reticulated foam vs non-woven media

Reticulated foam is a three-dimensional skeleton with an open pore structure, so it holds its shape without a frame, can be washed and can be compressed into a seal. Non-woven media is cheaper per square metre and holds more dust, but it needs a frame and is not normally washable.

Plain foam vs carbon-loaded foam

Plain foam removes particles and mist only. Carbon-loaded foam adds light odour and gas removal in the same thickness, which is useful on vehicle cabins, equipment enclosures and recirculating air paths where there is no space for a separate carbon stage.

Where it is used

EV charging vents and outdoor electronics

Intake and vent foam on charging piles and outdoor cabinets, where the foam has to survive rain, ultraviolet light and repeated cleaning.

Marine engine rooms

Engine room ventilation and oil mist separation, where salt air and constant humidity rule out a foam that hydrolyses.

Marine equipment case →

Speaker mesh and acoustic panels

Acoustic grilles and speaker mesh, where the foam has to be acoustically transparent, dust tight and flame rated.

Motor inlets and oil mist separation

FAQ

What is reticulated filter foam?
Reticulated foam is polyurethane foam from which the cell windows have been removed, leaving an open three-dimensional skeleton. Air passes through the pores rather than around closed cells, which is what makes it usable as a filter, a mist eliminator or an acoustic grille.
What does PPI mean?
PPI is pores per inch. A higher PPI means finer pores, better capture and a higher pressure drop; a lower PPI gives more airflow. The WS-PRF range covers 10 to 60 PPI, and the right figure depends on the airflow available and the particle size you need to stop.
Is filter foam washable?
Yes. Wash it in water with a mild detergent, rinse, and let it dry completely before refitting — squeezing it out is fine, but a wet foam left in a warm enclosure will eventually hydrolyse if it is a polyester grade. The polyether grade tolerates repeated washing much better.
What temperature can the foam take?
The WS-PRF polyether foam is rated from -43 °C to 107 °C continuous. Where the application runs hotter than that, a non-woven or glass fibre media is the appropriate material rather than foam.
Is the foam flame retardant?
The WS-PRF grade is UL 94 recognised, which covers most equipment and transport specifications. If your project has a specific flame clause, send it and we will confirm the grade against it.
Can the foam be cut to shape?
Yes, it is normally supplied as cut parts rather than as standard sheets: gaskets, vent inserts, grille covers and die-cut panels. Send the drawing or the sample part.
Does the carbon-loaded foam remove odours?
It removes light odour and low concentrations of organic compounds in recirculating air, which is the case it was designed for. For a continuous solvent or ammonia load the carbon is consumed quickly and a dedicated activated carbon filter is the better answer.
How do I choose between 10 and 60 PPI?
Match the pore size to the smallest particle you need to stop and to the pressure drop the fan can afford. If you are not sure, tell us the airflow, the contaminant and the available space, and we will propose a pore size.
