Air Filters

Whalesens makes air filters for equipment as well as for buildings. The WSE-S range is open-cell polyurethane foam loaded with powdered activated carbon, cut to sheet or frame size, and it was developed for EV charging piles and outdoor cabinets where the filter has to stop dust and insects, survive rain and ultraviolet light, and still keep the pressure drop low enough for a small fan.

The media is washable and the frame and protective mesh are reusable, so one panel can serve several service cycles. Send us the enclosure opening, the airflow and what you need to stop — dust, oil mist or odour — and we will quote a pore size and thickness for it.

Selection table

Model Media Pore size Thickness Carbon content Initial resistance Flame rating
Whalesens WSE-S EV Charging Air Filter | Ultra-Thin, Custom & Washable Polyurethane open-cell foam HR-20 (35 ppi), HR-15 (30 ppi), HR-10 (20 ppi) 3 – 100 mm ≥50% ≤35 Pa (10 mm medium-pore media at 1.0 m/s) UL94 HF-1, or UL900 on project request

How it compares

Foam vs pleated media

A pleated panel packs more media area into the same face size, so it holds more dust and suits a ducted HVAC system with a proper holding frame. Open-cell foam is rigid, keeps its shape without a frame and can be washed, which is why it is used on equipment enclosures, vent panels and charging piles rather than inside ducts.

Carbon-loaded foam vs a separate carbon stage

In the WSE-S panels the activated carbon is carried inside the foam, so a single part does coarse dust and light odour duty. Where the gas load is real — solvents, ammonia, exhaust fumes — one panel is not enough and a dedicated carbon panel, carbon bag or V-bank carbon filter should be added downstream.

Washable vs disposable

Washable panels cost more per unit and less per year, but the efficiency you get back depends on the pad being refitted and seated properly. Disposable pleated panels are more consistent frame to frame and are the better choice where the maintenance team cannot guarantee a refit procedure.

Where it is used

EV charging piles and outdoor cabinets

Intake protection for DC fast chargers, AC piles and outdoor power cabinets, where dust, insects and humidity are the main causes of fan and electronics failure.

Electrical rooms and switchgear

High and low voltage switch rooms and control rooms, where the filter protects busbars and relays from conductive dust.

FAQ

What is an air filter made of?
Most industrial air filters are a media held in a frame: non-woven synthetic fibre, glass fibre, pleated paper or, for equipment protection, open-cell polyurethane foam. The WSE-S panels use polyurethane foam carrying powdered activated carbon, in an aluminium alloy or galvanised steel frame, and the media can be washed rather than replaced every cycle.
Where are foam air filters used?
Wherever the filter has to be thin, cleanable and mechanically self-supporting — EV charging piles, outdoor cabinets, marine engine rooms, speaker mesh and motor inlets. They are not the right choice inside a ducted HVAC system, where a framed pleated or bag filter is used instead.
Can Whalesens air filters be washed?
Yes for the WSE-S panels and for the washable plank range: vacuum or wash the foam, let it dry fully, and refit it. Glass fibre and pleated paper media are not washable — wetting damages the fibre structure and the efficiency does not come back.
What pore size should I choose?
Pore size is quoted in PPI (pores per inch) or as a grade such as HR-20, HR-15 and HR-10. Finer foam catches more but raises the pressure drop; for an enclosure with a small fan the coarser grades are usually the right trade-off. Tell us the fan curve and we will size it.
What is the pressure drop?
The WSE-S range is specified at 1.0 m/s face velocity, where the 10 mm medium-pore media measures no more than 35 Pa initial resistance. Resistance rises as the panel loads, so the replacement point should be set from the fan headroom rather than from a fixed number of months.
Do these filters remove odours?
The carbon-loaded panels do, within limits: the media carries at least 50% carbon by weight and is tested for benzene adsorption. That is enough for enclosure-level odour and low concentrations of organic compounds, but a high gas load needs a dedicated activated carbon filter in series.
What sizes and thicknesses are available?
Standard foam sheets are 100×200 cm and 120×200 cm, in thicknesses from 3 mm to 100 mm, and can be supplied as cut slices or fitted into a frame with protective mesh. Custom cuts are the normal case for equipment panels, so send the drawing rather than a stock size.
Are the filters flame retardant?
The WSE-S panels are rated UL94 HF-1, with UL900 available on request, and the washable plank and polyether foam ranges use UL 94 recognised foam. Where a project fire specification applies, send the clause and we will confirm the grade against it.
