Filter Media Rolls

Whalesens produces the filter media as well as the filters made from it. The range covers non-woven polyester pre-filter media, non-woven glass fibre media and carbon-loaded media, supplied in rolls, as pre-cut slices or as framed pads. The rolls are the same material used in our own panel, pocket and bag filters, so a filter maker can buy media and finished filters from one source.

The polyester media runs from G2 to G4 in EN 779 with a progressive density structure; the glass fibre grade is used for paint mist and high dust holding duty; and the carbon media is supplied as WS-AC350G and WS-AC480G. Send us the grade, the cutting width and the roll length, or the frame size if you want the pads cut for you.

Selection table

Model Filtration grade Media Thickness Initial resistance Final resistance Temperature
Activated Carbon Filter Media G3, G4 5 ± 1 mm (G3), 10 ± 1 mm (G4) 20 Pa 200 Pa 180 °C
Fiberglass Filter Media G3 (EN779), EU3 (EUROVENT) Non-woven glass fibre, progressive density 60 mm and 100 mm 15 Pa and 20 Pa 250 Pa and 280 Pa ≤170°C
Pre Air Filter Media G2, G3, G4 (EN779); EU2, EU3, EU4 (EUROVENT) Non-woven polyester (PET) fibre, progressive density 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 mm 20 – 25 Pa 125 – 250 Pa ≤ 100 °C

How it compares

Polyester vs glass fibre media

Polyester media is the general-purpose choice: inexpensive, stable in humid air and available in a wide range of weights and thicknesses. Glass fibre media is denser and holds considerably more dust in the same face area, which is why it is used on paint booth intake, oil mist and heavy pre-filtration duty.

Plain media vs carbon-loaded media

Carbon-loaded media adds odour and gas removal to coarse particle filtration, at the cost of some dust holding capacity and a higher unit price. It is worth using where odour, formaldehyde or solvent vapour is a real complaint; where the problem is only dust, the plain media is the more economical choice.

Roll media vs a finished filter

Buying media lets you control stock, cut to any size and replace only the pad. Buying the finished filter gets you a frame, a gasket and a tested assembly, which is usually cheaper once labour and waste are counted. Many customers do both: rolls for large flat areas, framed filters for the critical stages.

Where it is used

Paint booth intake and ceiling

Roll media laid over the ceiling grid distributes air across the booth and traps overspray, and is replaced as a sheet rather than as a frame.

FAQ

What is filter media?
Filter media is the material that actually does the filtering — non-woven synthetic fibre, glass fibre, pleated paper, carbon-loaded felt or foam. It is supplied flat as roll stock or sheet, or assembled with a frame, gasket and protective mesh to become a filter.
Which grade should I use for pre-filtration?
G2 and G3 handle lint, insects and large dust at a very low pressure drop; G4 is the usual choice where a medium-efficiency filter follows and you want the dust load taken off it. The right step is the coarsest grade that protects the stage behind it.
What thickness do I need?
Thickness is set by the holding frame and by how much dust you want the sheet to hold before it is replaced. Thicker media holds more dust but takes more depth and adds resistance; the standard range runs from 5 mm to 25 mm for polyester media and 60 mm to 100 mm for glass fibre.
Can the media be cut to size?
Yes. Rolls, pre-cut slices and framed pads are all supplied, and the cutting is done to your size rather than to a stock list. Send the frame dimensions and the quantity per size.
Does carbon-loaded media really remove odour?
It removes light odour and low concentrations of organic compounds, and it is a sensible single-stage answer for enclosures and small air handling units. For a heavy solvent or ammonia load the carbon is consumed quickly; a thicker carbon filter with more residence time is then the better use of the money.
What formats are available?
Rolls, pre-cut slices and framed pads. The glass fibre grade is also supplied as full rolls for booth ceilings, and the carbon media as sheets for panel and pocket filters.
How is the media packed and stored?
Rolls are supplied on a core and wrapped, and should be stored flat, dry and out of direct sunlight. Carbon-loaded media should stay in its wrapping until use, because it will gradually take up whatever is in the air around it.
Can I get samples before ordering a roll?
Yes. For a new application the normal route is a sample sheet at the grade we recommend, tested on your line, before a roll quantity is ordered.
