Activated carbon pocket filters are a deep bag filter for HVAC systems, removing odors and low-concentration VOCs from supply air.

An activated carbon pocket filter is a gas-phase stage rather than a dust filter. Its media is activated carbon filter cotton held in a multi-bag construction, and it is installed in the air handling chain at the point where odors and low concentrations of formaldehyde, benzene and ammonia have to be taken out of the supply air. Because the target is gas, it belongs downstream of the particulate stages that would otherwise load the carbon with dust and shorten its working life.

The pocket shape exists to give the carbon a large media area within a limited duct depth, which keeps face velocity and resistance low while the air stays in contact with the carbon long enough for adsorption to take place. Selection comes down to the gas being targeted, the grade that matches the upstream filter, the frame arrangement, and whether the frameless option suits the holding frame. Replacement is driven by adsorption capacity rather than by differential pressure: a saturated carbon stage can still read a low pressure drop, so change-out is set by odor breakthrough, weight gain or the schedule the application needs.
